Browser tools. Clearer workflows.
Explore web browser tools APIs for navigation, selectors, screenshots, and structured data across Chrome, Safari, and Firefox.
A browser tools API gives a program a way to work with browser state. Depending on the interface, that can include opening pages, locating controls, capturing images, reading content, and observing events. Begin with the user journey you need to support, then select the environment in which to verify it.
A browser session has context
Keep the page, tab, account state, language, viewport, and target environment explicit. Two tabs with similar titles are still separate contexts. A redirected page can be technically loaded while showing an unexpected screen. Confirm the intended state before the next action.
Locate by intent
A selector should identify a meaningful target. Prefer a clear semantic locator where the tool supports it, and scope repeated controls to the section or item you intend to use. If the application provides maintained test identifiers, treat them as an interface shared by development and testing.
The selector workflow explains how to review target ambiguity. The navigation guide focuses on readiness and page identity, while screenshot workflows cover evidence capture.
Choose an actual browser target
Chrome, Safari, and Firefox belong in the content plan because they are distinct browser targets. A browser engine, a branded browser, and a mobile browser configuration are not interchangeable test environments. Record exactly which configuration a result represents.
Use standards as a reference point
The W3C WebDriver specification describes a remote interface for browser control. Actual support still depends on the browser and driver you choose; read the implementation’s documentation before depending on a particular command.
Keep browser runs observable
Capture the evidence that explains an outcome: the expected target, a meaningful error category, and the relevant artifact. A failed assertion and an unavailable browser should not look like the same failure. Start with the browser automation and selectors guide, then add repeatable screenshots and structured logs.
